Hi I'm a fan and new to the site. I find that some of the posts on here are very interesting with some being very silly indeed. I'd like to clear up the bluebird nickname as my introduction.
The Bluebird nickname was invented by a very popular club member named Gary Martin in the 70's. The club did not have a nickname for the previous 50 or so years and he thought it was time to install one. The bluebird nickname has nothing at all to do with Cardiff City. Mr Martin also used the nickname " the rockets " but that goes down in history as a reference to the team in the 70's as " the arch's rockets " just like for eg " the busby babes ".
If anybody's interested, the suffix "welfare" was established due to the club and the park belonging to the people of the village. The park was maintained by donations from the industry that operated from within the village. When the park was eventually handed over to the council, it was agreed that teams who would use the park as their homes field, whether it would be football, cricket or bowls, would have to play under the name Dafen.
Thanks for that bit of history.

Just trying to publicise the game a bit. It's unusual for a touring team to come down and play us so we are looking to advertise the fact. No, it won't be a regular thing.
